Ice skating is a wonderful form of exercise in Oklahoma City. With Arctic Edge Ice Arena in Edmond and Blazers Ice Centre in South OKC open daily, there are many opportunities to become physically fit. Junior ice hockey leagues, adult league play, recreational or competitive figure skating and curling are available year round at both facilities.

All forms of ice skating improve cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and range of motion, creating long and lean muscles. The lateral movement of proper skating technique, utilizing the resistance of the blade pressure against the ice surface, employs all the lower body and core muscles. Ice skating can meet both your aerobic and anaerobic training, depending on the intensity and duration of your sessions. Studies prove that resistance and weight bearing exercises improve joint and heart health, muscular strength, and overall fitness. Learn how to skate with a few lessons, and come join us 3 to 5 times a week for at least 30 to 45 minutes daily to meet your cardio needs. Public sessions and skate rental are available daily. Year round “Learn to Skate” group and private lessons, birthday parties, and events are our specialty.

Arctic Edge Ice Arena and Blazers Ice Centre house the best programming in the southwest region. Hockey Director Mike McEwen, former NHL and 3-time Stanley Cup Champion, oversees all youth hockey development. Adult hockey leagues are coordinated by OU Hockey Assistant Coach Larry Donovan. Our international figure skating coaching staff will design a training plan to meet your individual fitness goals, regardless of age or ability. Both facilities are affiliated with USA Hockey, U.S. Figure Skating, and Professional Skaters Association International (PSA).

 It’s time to talk football.

Bob Stoops, Sam Bradford and the rest of the Oklahoma Sooners are back to square one after last year’s loss to the Florida Gators in the Orange Bowl.  The Heisman winner will have a great arsenal with eleven players returning to the offense this season.  Sophomore Ryan Broyles is the only wide receiver returning to the Sooners this season so Stoops and the Sooners are going to be looking for players to fill some key offensive positions.  Bradford will also have to contend with a new center, will it be Junior Jason Hannan or Freshman Ben Habern replacing Jon Cooper?  We will find out when they hit the field.

The Sooners will have nine starters return this season on the defensive side, with so many starters returning the defense should not stumble, only improve from its national ranking of 99 in pass coverage from last season.  There should not be any doubt that last year’s defensive standouts, Seniors Auston English and Keenan Clayton as well as Junior Dominique Franks and the offensive standouts of Juniors Demarco Murray and Mossis Madu, and the seniors, Jermaine Gresham and Chris Brown all should have a season full of highlighted plays to keep Sooner fans happy.  The Sooner season begins September 5, when they take on BYU in Arlington, TX.  The game will be aired on ESPN.  The Sooners have made the Sporting News top five, coming in ranked as number three.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricanes punishment of Ball State with a score of 45-13 in the GMAC Bowl was a successful conclusion to a 2008 season.  The Golden Hurricane has 16 offensive players and 20 defensive players returning this season.  The Hurricanes and Coach Todd Graham, begin a new season with a hunt for a new quarterback.  There are three candidates battling for the position Freshman Shavodrick Beaver, Junior G.J. Kinne and Senior Jacob Bower.

Whoever is chosen will have a great target to throw to in Sophomore Damaris Johnson this season.  Johnson, a freshman last season, finished fifth nationally, in all-purpose yards.  On the defensive side, Senior Safety James Lockett, who last season had 82 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and  forced five fumbles will be a force to be reckoned with this season.  The Hurricanes will have plenty of other seasoned wide receivers for the quarterbacks to pass the ball to.

The Golden Hurricane season will kick off with three road games the first on September 4 at Tulane, and then they take on New Mexico and on September 19 take on the Oklahoma Sooners.  They face a tough road early in the season to fight their way back to the Conference USA championship game.  Tulsa has made the Sporting News Top 50, coming in at number 41.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys are looking to bounce back after their loss to Oregon in the Pacific Life Holiday bowl last season.  Coach Mike Gundy and his Co-offensive coordinator are going to have a solid offense to make plays this season.  Senior Quarterback Zach Robinson returns to lead the Cowboys to a successful season.  OSU has 15 returning starters this season. Junior Wide-receiver Dez Bryant returns to the field to lead the cowboys in receptions and make a few dazzling catches in the end zone.  The cowboys were ranked sixth nationally in total offense with an average of 487 yards per game.

Robinson is one of two Big 12 quarterbacks, the other being Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, nominated for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

Junior Kendall Hunter and Senior Keith Toston, two of Robinson’s favorite backs will be back, along with many other talented players this season to make the Cowboy faithful happy.  The Cowboy staff welcomes new running backs coach Robert Gillespie and Defensive Coordinator Bill Young to the coaching corral at OSU this year.

The Cowboy’s season will kick-off September 5 against the Georgia Bulldogs at 2:30; the game will be aired on ABC.  The Cowboys and the Sooners do not face-off until November 28 in Norman.  The game is looking to be a shootout as both teams will be ready for battle. The Cowboys have made the Sporting News Top 10 coming in at 10.

In the preseason media Big 12 polls, OU and OSU finished second and third respectively behind Texas in the South.  Both teams are laden with talent and should put on a great show for their respective fans.

Karsten Creek to Host Regional Flinals for NCAA Championship Golf

By Brandy Morris

Oklahoma State and Karsten Creek Golf Course will host the regional finals of the NCAA National Golf Finals beginning May 13 through the 16th.  Karsten Creek opened May 9, 1994. Oklahoma State’s Athletic Director, Mike Holder planned and raised the funds to create what Karsten Creek has become today. Karsten Creek is the home of the OSU Cowboy golf team. It is open to the public seven days a week. They have several amenities including  a clubhouse, caddies, golf carts,  a restaurant, and luxurious lodges. If you are interested in playing a round of golf at Karsten Creek, call 405-743-1658.

This is the final leg for the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the race to the NCAA Golf Championships. The championship will be held at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

To qualify for the championships, the teams have to compete at six regional sites throughout the country, California, Florida ,Kentucky, New Jersey, Texas and Oklahoma. Karsten Creek is the last stop before they head to championship play. Only the top five teams and one individual from each conference will play for the tournament title.

According to Golfstat.com, the current top ten schools are the University of Georgia, the University of Southern California, Clemson, Oklahoma State University, Stanford University, the University of Washington, the University of Arkansas, the University of Alabama, Georgia Tech, and Indiana University.

According to the NCAA Regional Participation Manual, on Monday, May 4, 2009, the NCAA Division I Golf Committee will announce the names of the teams and individuals that have been selected  to participate in the finals competition.

At the present time, Oklahoma State University is the only Big 12 team ranked high enough to qualify for the tournament title. Texas A&M is currently ranked 12th and Texas Tech is ranked 15th. The University of Oklahoma is currently ranked 84th in the country. The Sooners have a chance for an automatic bid if they win the Big 12 golf tournament, which begins April 27 and ends on the 29th.

The Big 12 Championship will be hosted by Missouri and will be held at the Prairie Dunes Golf Course in Hutchison, Kansas. The winner of the Big 12 Championship will be determined as we go to press.

Big 12 Slugs It Out in April

By Brandy Morris

Big 12 baseball kicked off its conference season in April. The Texas Longhorns are sitting on top of the polls.  The Oklahoma Sooners are in a three-way tie with Kansas and Kansas State for the fourth spot in the conference.  The Sooners have several players at the top of the leader boards in stats.

The Sooners kick-off the month of May with a three game series at home with the Kansas Jayhawks and a game with Southern Utah.  May 5th they play Texas-Arlington at Arlington and then join OSU in bedlam.  OU closes out the season at home with a three game series against the Texas A&M Aggies.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys have had a rough start in the month of April going 2 and 6 halfway through the month.  Hopefully, the Cowboys can turn their conference season around before heading into the Big 12 tournament.

The Cowboys kick-off the month of May with a three game home series with the Kansas State Wildcats.  Bedlam baseball begins May 8 in Tulsa at the Drillers Stadium and the final three games will be at the Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.  The Cowboys close out the season in Lubbock, Texas taking on the Red Raiders in a three game series.

All the Big 12 teams will come together in Oklahoma City, at the Bricktown Ballpark for the Big 12 Baseball Championship that starts on May 20.  Tickets can be purchased online and at the ballpark.  For more information, call the Oklahoma City Red Hawks box office at (405) 218-1000.
